The Children Beyond Chernobyl was filmed in Belarus as Adi Roche and a 100 strong team of Irish aid workers returned to the world's most highly contaminated nuclear accident radiation zone. The documentary is filled with moments of hope and great joy as children are being given new lives with the help of Irish aid programmes.
This harrowing footage shows a tonsil operation being carried out without anesthetic. The child is blind folded, strapped to a chair and the procedure is carried out. Many operations like this were carried out on a daily.
I felt it necessary to film the operation to raise awareness of the suffering of these poor children. After this documentary was broadcasted on Irish TV, the people of Ireland donated thousands of pounds & the hospital could finally afford an anesthetic machine.
